About 12 years ago, a small group of us at Silverchair Learning (and later Relias Learning) set out on a mission to revolutionize the way training was delivered to staff within the Senior Care industry. We were determined, passionate, idealistic, and probably a little bit naive. Many people told us this couldn’t be done – that the Senior Care industry would never embrace online learning in a widespread fashion (too technology averse, not enough funding to pay for it, online learning was too “impersonal”, and so on).
We ignored those people.
We believed the old way of delivering training was broken, and that we had developed a better way. We weren’t just selling “online classes” – we were providing a solution to better manage an organization’s training program to get greater quality and consistency of training at a lower cost.
We were passionate about this, because we believe that our elders provided us the amazing country we enjoy today, and that they deserve the best trained caregivers possible when they were at their most vulnerable in the final years of their lives.
Fast forward past all those naysayers from a decade ago – Relias Learning now has over 6000 clients with 3 million users taking over 30 million courses per year. Our NPS scores, client satisfaction surveys, and customer retention rates tell us that the industry has in fact embraced online learning.
Now, some of us from team Relias have been tasked with a new challenge – how do we solve the problem of chronic turnover and shortages in some of the critical “frontline” jobs that are essential to the day-to-day operations of Senior Care providers? I have worked in the Senior Care industry for 22 years now. During that time, CNA turnover has consistently averaged 50-100% per year. With 1.5 million CNA’s in the US, that means we are consistently turning over, rehiring, and retraining 750,000 staff per year and “plugging holes in the dam” for an average of 75,000 vacant positions. This means overtime, agency staffing, and staff shortages. Research shows that as you are reading this, about 45% of your CNA’s are thinking about leaving you, and 25% are actively looking for a job.
Enough is enough!
It is time to start thinking differently in how we attract, prepare, and retain CNA’s for this industry. They are the backbone of the Senior Care workforce – where the rubber meets the road in achieving the quality of care and client satisfaction that we want for our residents and their families.
Straightaway Health Careers has been created to attack this challenge. We envision a world where CNA shortages and constant turnover are something we vaguely recall. We want to dream big.
Our mission is simple – we help prevent shortages for high demand healthcare jobs.
This mission will not be easy. If it was easy, it would have been solved by now. We have to be willing to take a fresh perspective, try new things, take risks, make mistakes, learn from them, and try again. But we will succeed.
