When implementing CNA Edge, there is no one more important than your instructors. Instructors play such a key role in the overall success of your CNA training program; therefore, Straightaway’s Instructor Orientation is an important step in preparing your instructors to use the CNA Edge courseware. Whether you are brand new to training or have seasoned instructors, CNA Edge is a change and our goal is to ensure your instructors are comfortable and confident with the new program.
Straightaway’s Role in Orientation
We begin laying the groundwork for instructors early in the roll-out process by helping them understand the why behind implementing a new program like this. Organizations choose Straightaway because they want better trained, well-prepared CNAs who will stay on the job long term. They want to choose their own destiny by producing their own CNAs instead of waiting for already trained CNAs to come along in times of need. Or they understand that their current approach isn’t meeting all their needs and look to Straightaway to help them train even more CNAs. Instructors should understand why they were chosen to participate in this important company initiative.
Straightaway will give instructors access to the learning management system (LMS), along with a brief overview of how to navigate it. Our expectation is that instructors complete all of Section 1 prior to the actual Instructor Orientation. This will help establish a foundation from which we’ll build during the orientation session.
While we recommend that the orientation session be done onsite, it can also be done via video conference in two sessions. An onsite session is typically one day but is extended to two days for a larger group of instructors. For example, a recent session for 10 instructors was completed in 2 days. The session starts with some context setting, and again, we circle back to the why. We want instructors to understand that they’ll be using this technology to support and enhance the work they already do. From there, we’ll show how the course curriculum aligns with your state required curriculum. While all the topics are covered, the sequence of these topics may be a bit different than that of what your instructors are accustomed. We’ll continue by providing context around the adult learning principles that have been incorporated throughout the course and introduce instructors to all the characters in the story and the topics covered in each section. Instructors will also be shown how to navigate the LMS, manage their students, and run reports. Our nurse consultant or customer success manager will model how to deliver the material and we’ll conclude our session with the instructors doing a teach back.
Ready for class!
After an Instructor Orientation session concludes, your facility will be ready for its first CNA Edge class! Of course, we encourage instructors to continue to make progress with the course. They will be much more comfortable with the courseware when they have the most experience with it! We’ll continue to work with your instructors to help them get their students set-up, test their classroom equipment, and answer any additional questions they have prior to their first class. Our goal through the whole process is to set up instructors for success, thereby helping your organization produce more CNAs!
